Bread Head Destroyed (2010)

Just before I was due to exhibit my 'Bread Head' sculpture for the third time, I submitted it to be destroyed as part of Michael Landy's installation 'Art Bin' at South London Gallery. Instead of the bread head, I then exhibited an essay about auto-destructuve tendencies in art in relation to the laws of commodity. I was suspicious of the easy appeal of the bread mask (which had originally been a relic of a performance and should have decayed months ago, yet somehow didn't). It seemed too much of a novelty item for me and I wanted to kill it. By killing it, however, I was able to make it more powerful somehow. I am interested in how the laws of commodity mean that rareness increases power and by destroying my work I was able to make it absolutely rare and therefore priceless.
