Donation, 2003 (performance)
I filmed myself giving blood at a local blood bank and projected the film onto a sheet. I painted over the image with expressive lines of red ink.
The blood letting and dripping ink were references to extreme performance artists such as the Vienna Actionists. I wanted to subvert the position of the performance artist from an angsty outsider to someone engaged with the community. This idea was demonstrated through the ordinary but benevolent act of 'giving blood'. I was also interested in how everyday actions can be reinterpreted as forms of art practice within the context of art history.
