Laos Leaves 2008
A street intervention in a colonial-style square in Vientiane, the capital of the People's Democratic Republic of Laos. I simultated temperate leaf fall in this tropical setting by cutting leaf shapes from rolls of banana leaf bought from a nearby shop.
I was thinking about how the tourist industry presents nature and culture in idealised forms to meet the expectations and tastes of visitors from the West. I was also interested in the French colonial feel of the city. I reflected on these ideas through the gesture of transforming the banana leaf into european-looking leaves.
