Wrecking Ball, 2007
This piece was made for an exhibition to mark the demolition of the studios that a group of us had been working in as artist's assistants. I was interested in making a destructive piece of work in this space of production.
I collected old crockery from car boot sales and arranged it so that it covered a large section of floor in the kitchen area of the building. Viewers were invited to choose a plate or cup and smash it. The smash zone had a microphone in it which was attached to an amp and speakers in the main warehouse space, so that everytime someone smashed a piece of crockery the sound filled the entire warehouse, as though the whole building was about to collapse.
